Spotlight Interview: Fashion Stylist and Influencer, Deborah Gates

Spotlight Interview: Fashion Stylist and Influencer, Deborah Gates

What does a typical day in your week look like?

Depends on the day :)  Generally, I am up around 7 a.m.  I don't like to rush in the mornings and I like to enjoy the process of putting my outfit together for the day ahead.  I try to stick to a mostly Keto style of eating so it's eggs for breakfast and a decaf coffee and then I head to work where I am an in-store stylist.  Home at about 5.45 p.m., unwind a little, and then dinner, and then the evening is spent relaxing with my husband and doing admin relating to my social media commitments.

Tell us about what inspired you to become a fashion influencer? What was your motivation for getting started?

My original intention when I started posting on social media was simply sharing outfits, and connecting with like-minded women. As my commitment to a more ethical approach to fashion grew I became more focused on sharing slow, sustainable, and ethical fashion with a view to offering alternatives to fast fashion.  In addition to that, in recent years, I have also felt compelled to communicate a message that is age-positive, size-positive, and encourages women (especially those over 50) to be confident in their style and break down fashion stereotypes.

What has been your favourite part of your journey?

So many things!  The ongoing learning that comes with working in this space.  The people I have met along the way.  The opportunities that have come my way.

Who is your primary audience, and what do you think keeps them coming back to your page?

My primary audience is women 45 - 65.  Hard question to answer but I hope it's my consistency, my honesty, and my creative styling that keeps them coming back.

If you could only have one PQ Collection item for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

I think it would have to be the Maxi Miracle Dress.  The style is timeless.  I love the drama of long drapey lengths.  The dress can be worn dressy or casual, and it is a perfect dress for traveling.

What is your top tip for staying on top of fashion trends and can this be done on a budget?

To be honest, I really don't follow the trends. I am aware of them and occasionally something will appeal to me and I will carefully consider if it will work with my personal style.  I think it's more important to develop a strong sense of who you are style wise and add to your closet based on your preferred aesthetic.  This way your wardrobe will have longevity and a cohesiveness.  And yes this can be done on a budget by buying preloved, upcycling pieces in your existing wardrobe and seeking out quality brands with a price point that suits your budget.

Out of all of the PQ Collection styles you’ve worn, which styles do you reach for the most?

It would have to be the Miracle Maxi and the Soho Dress.  Both suit my style and have elements that add interest.

What's your all-time favourite PQ Collection style? What would you say is a go-to outfit for you?

Maxi Miracle as I mentioned above, and a go to outfit for me is a great dress, and statement accessories and I usually like to incorporate some layers.

What are your favourite fashion trends so far in 2024?

Flat shoes are still having their moment and I love that.  Apparently maxi skirts are big this year and given my love of the drama longer lengths can bring, this is one trend I will be looking at.

Who is your fashion muse in 2024?

I don't really have a fashion muse.  I find myself inspired by everyday women who step outside of the norm and take risks in their styling

What’s the one thing that your readers would be surprised to learn about you?

I am planning on getting my first (and most likely only) tattoo this year for my birthday.

What’s the TV show you’re binge-watching these days, if any?

Kin Season 2 on SBS...absolutely brilliant!
