Caring for Your Bamboo Fabric: What You Need to Know

At PQ Collection, our Bamboo collection features pieces crafted from bamboo-derived fabrics, a soft, versatile material that's become popular in casual and everyday wear. This guide covers what bamboo fabric is, how it feels to wear, and how to look after it so your pieces last.

What Is Bamboo Fabric?

Most bamboo clothing is made from bamboo viscose (also called bamboo rayon), produced by processing bamboo pulp into fibres. The resulting fabric tends to be lightweight, smooth to the touch, and drapes well, qualities that make it a popular choice for everyday essentials and relaxed styles.

Some bamboo fabrics are blended with cotton, spandex, or other fibres to improve stretch, structure, or durability. Check your garment's care label for the exact fibre composition of each piece.

Comfort & Feel

Bamboo viscose is widely noted for its soft handfeel, often compared to modal or fine cotton. The fabric tends to feel smooth against the skin, which many wearers find comfortable for all-day wear. Individual experiences will vary depending on the specific blend and garment construction.

Breathability

Bamboo-derived fabrics are generally considered breathable and lightweight, which can make them a comfortable choice in warmer conditions. Breathability may vary depending on the weave, weight, and any synthetic fibres present in the blend.

Odour Resistance

Some bamboo fabrics are reported to have mild odour-resistant properties, though this can vary between products and is not a guaranteed characteristic. For best results, follow the care instructions on your garment label.

Washing & Care

Bamboo fabric is generally considered washable at home, but it can be more delicate than heavier woven fabrics. To keep your bamboo pieces looking their best:

  • Wash on a gentle or delicate cycle in cold or lukewarm water (30°C or below is a good guide).
  • Use a mild detergent. Avoid bleach or fabric softeners, which can break down bamboo fibres over time.
  • Turn garments inside out before washing to reduce surface wear.
  • Avoid wringing or twisting. Gently reshape and lay flat or hang to dry.
  • Low heat if tumble drying. High heat can affect the softness and shape of bamboo fabric; air drying is often preferable.
  • Iron on a low setting if needed, or steam gently.

Always check the care label on each individual garment, as blended fabrics may have specific requirements.

Shrinkage

Like many natural-fibre fabrics, bamboo viscose can be prone to some shrinkage, particularly when exposed to high heat, whether in washing or drying. Washing in cool water and avoiding high-heat drying is the most effective way to minimise this risk.

If you're unsure about sizing, refer to the size guide available on each product page.

Caring for Your Pieces Over Time

Follow the care label on your PQ Collection garment to help preserve its feel, shape and appearance. Wash with similar fabrics and keep items with exposed hooks or zips separate to reduce the risk of snagging.
