Summer Reads Worth Your Time

by Adriana Heesh

Beach appropriate weather is well and truly here in Brisbane, and there’s nothing we at PQ Collection love more than laying down a towel, bathing in sunscreen and polishing off a great book while the song of the ocean serenades us. So if you’re going to spend a day in such an excellent way, you had better have a great book to go with it.

1. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

A great, easy read that makes you feel good! Don creates a sixteen page questionnaire to commence the ‘Wife Project’ as he tries to find the one. Get to know his character in this charming romance and you’ll understand why he thought this was the best approach.

2. Becoming by Michelle Obama

Famous for being the first lady but worthy of our admiration for many other reasons, Becoming is an autobiography that gives an in depth look into Michelle Obama’s childhood in Chicago, her time spent as a corporate lawyer, and of course, the challenges of being married to the president. An interesting and inspiring look at being a modern woman dedicated not only to her family, but to her work, community, overcoming adversity and of course, her country.

3. The One Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window by Jonas Jonasson

Witty, sharp writing that follows Allan, a man who has a century worth of sun laps under his belt as he climbs out of his nursing home window. Detailing the events of his colourful past experiences while his current adventure unravels is a delightful and uplifting experience.

4. Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton

While dealing with some pretty heavy themes, the fact that Boy Swallows Universe is set in Brisbane, Australia, makes it kind of compulsory to read for us Queenslanders. Follow Eli Bell and his mute brother August on a crazy journey as their family become entangled in the chaos of the Brisbane drug scene. A beautifully written and poetic story that is somehow inspiring despite all the heartache.

Have you read any of these novels? If so I'd love to hear your thoughts! And if you have any recommendations for others, please leave them in the comments below. Happy reading!

Love the PQ Collection family xx
